App launched to direct New Yorkers to condoms

A new smartphone app has been launched in New York that will find people the nearest place to get condoms.

The scheme is intended to encourage safer sex practices among residents and visitors to the city, as it seeks to curb sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies.

It means those who have iPhone or Android handsets will be able to locate 1,000 different dispensers of the prophylactic devices with the touch of a button.

Dr Monica Sweeney, New York's assistant health commissioner, said: "We want New York City to be the safest city in the world to have sex."

She defended the scheme against those who said it merely supports people having relations, adding: "We're not promoting sex, we're promoting safer sex."

Yesterday (February 14th) was chosen as the launch date of the project as it was Valentine's Day, which is a time of the year traditionally associated with love and romance.
