Campaigns for the use of condoms will lead to more cases of HIV and Aids, it has been claimed.

Father Juan Perez-Soba, writing in the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, said that those who are faced with the possibility of infection should consider abstinence.

"To present the condom as a solution to the problem is a grave error; to choose it simply as a habitual practice is to show a lack of responsibility," he added.

Father Perez-Soba continued by saying that prophylactics cannot guarantee safety in the long term from HIV and so couples should consider this.

There are some bishops and cardinals that argue if one member of a married couple has Aids then it is acceptable for condoms to be used.

Last month, a news piece in the Daily Northwestern stated that the use of condoms can cut down on the risk of catching a sexually transmitted infection.
