Condom use 'should be mandatory on porn sets'

Adult film stars should wear condoms when they are performing in films, one expert has claimed.

Michael Weinstein, president of Aids Healthcare Foundation, was speaking after the porn-film industry-funded health clinic AIM Medical Associates closed down.

Mr Weinstein observed that with this "fig leaf" no longer present, it is time the wearing of the prophylactic became mandatory.

"Testing adult film performers for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases is important, but has never been an effective substitute for safer sex and condom use," he added.

The official stated that if the sector refuses to take measures, then the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health should step in.

Among those who have supported the move to make condom use obligatory is Derrick Burts, who contracted HIV while working in the business in 2010.

Mr Burts said the level of help he was given from people within the industry after his diagnosis was disappointing.
