Condoms 'as important as seatbelts'

Individuals have been encouraged to think of condoms as life-saving devices not unlike seatbelts.

In an interview with the Miami Herald, Aids sufferer Kenne Tucker explained the importance of using protection when having sex.

"Think of a condom like you think of a seat belt," he advised people.

"It can be uncomfortable and restraining, but it only takes one accident and you'll wish you had been wearing it.'"

Mr Tucker was diagnosed with the disease in 1995 and has gone on to become a keen spokesman for sexual health.

More than a decade ago, he was given a prognosis of just three years to live, but has managed to survive much longer after enrolling on a treatment programme.

His comments come at a time when people across the globe commemorateWorld Aids Day (December 1st).

To mark the occasion, Sir Elton John was given the opportunity to act as guest editor for the Independent.
