Condoms 'should be used in new relationships'

Divorced individuals have been advised to ensure they use condoms when starting a sexual relationship with a new partner.

Writing for the Huffington Post, Sari Eckler Cooper described how many older people are unaware of the importance of contraceptives.

She stated that for many, condoms are seen as a preventative measure to avoid pregnancy rather than their ability to help stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

"When individuals become newly single their knowledge of ... safer sex guidelines may be outdated. Research is showing that the over 50-year-old demographic is showing increased rates of STD infection," Ms Cooper stated.

It was recommended that people discuss boundaries with new lovers before becoming intimate and be sure to use condoms.

In a separate article for the publication Ms Cooper recently urged singles to get tested for STDs in order to have peace of mind about their own and partner's health.
