Durex condoms for US teens?

Durex condoms could very well be the product of choice for many a US teen, as research has revealed that there is an association between oral and vaginal sex.

According to a study by University of California San Francisco and University of California Merced, published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, 50 per cent of teens who engage in oral sex during the ninth grade go on to have full intercourse by the end of the 11th.

"Teens don't consider oral sex to be sex and many are not aware of the risks involved," said Bonnie Halper-Felsher, senior author of the survey, which involved some 600 high school students.

She went on to urge parents, health care providers and teachers to be more upfront regarding this behaviour when talking to their charges.

This follows a report by the Center for Sexual Health Promotion at Indiana University that found one in three US teenagers not in monogamous relationships are making use of novelty condoms and other similar products.
