Female condom use promoted in Asia
Greater uptake of female condom use in Asia is being promoted through a special campaign.
The Tanmil Nadu Aids Control Society (Tansacs) is behind the Pink Umbrella initiative, which is trying to encourage women to carry the prophylactics with them and is offering the products at a reduced price, the Asian Age.
It was noted that while the male condom remains the most effective barrier contraceptive method, this approach could prove useful as women often do not have a say in condom usage.
PT Madhusudhanan, state marketing manager of condom promotion at Tansacs, explained the female version of the product can also be used when a woman is pregnant or menstruating.
He explained a greater number of ladies are coming forward to give the safe sex method a try, adding: "It took 20 years for the male condom to be fully accepted and we are happy with the progress the female condom has made."
