Lampedusa migrants to buy condoms?
People may have to buy condoms on the island of Lampedusa to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Migrants in the area are in need of contraception and the products should be circulated, the head of Italy's association of gynaecologists and obstetricians Nicola Surico told Adnkronos International.
"The contraceptives can be distributed to men and women, to cut the risk of STIs such as syphilis and the [cancer causing] human papillomavirus," he added.
As well as looking to control levels of STIs, the issue of unwarranted pregnancies also need to be controlled to prevent them from becoming a problem.
Mr Surico added many of the females who do not have condoms and get pregnant because of this may end up having abortions.
Lampedusa - an island in the region of Sicily located in the Mediterranean Sea - has a history of being a stopping off point for immigrants.
