Man caught stealing condoms in Blackpool

A man has been charged with stealing condoms from an Asda store in Blackpool.

The 46-year-old, who changed his name to Lionel Richie because of the passing resemblance he has to the soul singer, tried to take over £145 worth of the prophylactic, the Blackpool Gazette reports.

He was caught on CCTV stuffing the devices - which he intended to sell on - into a bag.

Prosecutor Brett Gerrity told the court: "This man was seen to remove four to five armfuls of condoms from the shelves."

Steven Duffy, who was defending Mr Richie, was reported by the newspaper as saying that the crime had caused much amusement at the police station.

Last month, Andrew Drew Cohen was caught as he tried to steal condoms from a Publix shop in Georgia, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.

He tried to make off with $30 (£19) in total before he was stopped.
