A new survey from the Irish Times has revealed that 58 per cent of sexually active adults have used sex toys. It seems that over half of adults are willing to spice things up a bit with a toy, with women being more likely to invest in a battery-powered friend than men.

According to the survey, women who identify as bisexual or lesbian are the most likely to make use of sex toys. Some 80 per cent of women who identified as being one of these orientations said that they use toys in the bedroom.

In terms of age, it was found that women between the ages of 25 and 34 are the most active users of sex toys, with seven out of ten of respondents falling between this age bracket admitting to using them.

Out of 11,776 respondents to the survey, only 42 per cent said that they hadn't used sex toys before.

Psychotherapist Trish Murphy told the news provider: "The growing comfort with sex and one’s own body would indicate a freedom to use sex toys, and the fact that women use them slightly more than men demonstrates their sense of freedom in their sexuality."

As well as revealing information about adults' sex toy usage, the survey also found that 20 per cent of respondents had had more than 20 sexual partners in their life. This was just slightly under the number of people who had only had sex with between two and four people (22 per cent).

It also found the average age that sexually active adults lost their virginity at was 19, which was consistent across the male and female categories. Although it was found that, on average, women lost their virginity around six months earlier than men.

The survey also revealed that most of the respondents (30 per cent) have sex either once or twice a week. However, 27 per cent of people admitted to having sex less than once a week.
