When you think about the negative consequences associated with sex, your mind probably goes to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unwanted pregnancy. However, for men, there is a painful possible downside to sex - penis fractures.

That's right, a little slip up in the bedroom could actually lead to penile fractures, a painful condition that can leave you out of action for a while. Although the chances of penile fractures are low - the Telegraph previously reported that there have been just 1,600 cases reported since 1924 - they can happen.

They're caused by a sharp, blunt force trauma, which can happen during both sex or masturbation. Around half of the people who experience a fracture of this kind hear a cracking sound at the moment of fracture, with the majority of individuals also losing their erection.

Researchers in Brazil in 2015 looked at 44 men who had experienced penile fractures to find the most common sex positions to cause the position. Of those included in the study, 28 had fractured their penises while having vaginal intercourse and in these cases, three positions were mentioned most frequently.

The cowgirl

Many men like the idea of women being on top during sex, but this is actually the most dangerous position for them. Half of the 28 women who fractured their sleeping partner's penis during sex did so during this position.

This is because a slight change in how a woman holds her body weight or if she starts to thrust too hard can result in bending the penis sharply, causing it to break. Similar issues occur in the reverse cowgirl position too, so it's worth being extra careful!

Doggy style

The second most dangerous position was found to be doggy style, as many men get over excited and thrust too hard and too vigorously, which can put them at risk of hitting the woman's pelvic bone. Not only can this be uncomfortable for her, it can be incredibly painful for him.

Some 28 per cent of penile fractures in the study were caused by doing it doggy style.

Missionary

While this position is a tried and tested classic, it is also responsible for 21 per cent of penile fractures. This is because you can, once again, hit the woman's pelvic bone or end up accidentally bending the penis, which can have potentially catastrophic consequences in the throes of passion.

So while condoms can help protect you from some of the downsides related to sex, they can't help you avoid other issues that could arise during a night of passion.
