Police seize counterfeit condoms in China

Police in China have busted an underground workshop ring that produces millions of condoms for distribution.

Failing to use proper condoms can leave people at greater risk of sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancy - and around 4.65 million already packaged prophylactics were confiscated from a location in the countryside of the Fujian province of southeast China, reports China Daily.

Police also picked up a further 1,100 pounds of unpackaged condoms as they raided a room housing a production line of workers busy lubricating the products.

The story - which highlights the importance of consumers buying condoms from reputable sources - comes after the racket was first exposed in February when a policeman purchased some unusually cheap items on the internet for testing and found them to not be the real deal.

As a consequence of the workshop raids, 37 suspects have been arrested in the provinces of Fujian, Zhejiang and Henan.
