Robot sex 'is the future'
It will become commonplace for humans to engage in sexual activities with robots in the future, according to one expert.
Helen Driscoll, a psychologist who specialises in sex and relationships at the University of Sunderland, has said that improvements in technology will make it possible for intimate interaction between humans and robots by the year 2070.
Ms Driscoll says that "sex tech" is already showing that humans will lead into physical relationships with technology. She states that this means "robophilia" will become a normal attitude in around 55 years.
She stated that motion-sensing, robotic and interactive technology are all likely to become important factors in the sex industry, especially when you take into account the number of mannequin sex toys available on the market today.
“But if we think back to the social norms about sex that existed just 100 years ago, it is obvious that they have changed rapidly and radically," Ms Driscoll told the Daily Mirror.
She continued to say that it seems the likely route that mannequin sex partners will evolve so as to "come to life" in the years to come.
In addition to robots, Ms Driscoll believes that the advances in virtual reality will also influence robot/human sexual interaction in the future.
She told the news provider that virtual reality "becomes more realistic and immersive and is able to mimic and even improve on the experience of sex with a human partner.” This will lead more people to choose technology over people when it comes to sex, as the tech will allow them to enjoy a sexual encounter with a "perfect" person.
However, Ms Driscoll also thinks that this lack of human interaction could have a negative effect on some people, as loneliness is linked to a number of emotional and physical problems.
"Some people start to prefer technologically enhanced virtual sex to sex with humans, we may also see greater numbers of people living alone, spending more time in virtual reality," she said.
