Safe sex warnings reiterated as STI rates soar
Young Britons have again been reminded of the importance of engaging in safe sex after new data showed rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are increasing.
Public Health England's (PHE) latest statistics showed there were over 144,000 diagnoses of chlamydia or gonorrhoea in 15 to 24-year-olds in 2017.
This equated to one person being diagnosed every four minutes and could have serious repercussions for their future health.
Many STIs are symptomless but can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility and even arthritis.
Heath officials are also extremely concerned because gonorrhoea in particular is becoming increasingly resistant to the antibiotics traditionally used to treat it and may even be untreatable in future.
PHE's campaign focuses on encouraging young people to always use condoms and Made in Chelsea's Sam Thompson is backing the drive on social media.
"We're not talking about safe sex or normalising the use of condoms enough, and finding out all the facts about STIs has taught me so much. We should all feel empowered to use them and to see condoms as a normal part of a healthy sex life," she commented.
Late last year, a survey carried out by PHE and YouGov found that almost half of young people who are sexually active have had sex with a new partner without using a condom.
One in ten reported never having used one, with the main reason being that sex felt better without.
However, this needn't be the case if you ensure you're getting hold of good-quality condoms in the first place.
